FAQs About Handmade Insurance

Do I Need Insurance To Sell Handmade Crafts?

Yes, you often need insurance to sell handmade crafts, especially at craft shows, markets, and festivals. Many events require proof that you carry general liability insurance, usually in the form of a Certificate of Insurance (COI).

Venues may also ask to be added to your policy as an additional insured to help protect them against accidents caused by your business.

Does Handmade Insurance Cover Online Sales?

Yes, ACT Pro’s handmade insurance can cover online sales. If you sell your products on your website or other online platforms, insurance helps protect your business if a customer says your product caused injuries or property damage.

You can also add data breach insurance for extra protection against cyber-related costs.

What Is the “Handmade Item Rule” and Will It Affect My Eligibility?

For your handmade business to be eligible for ACT Pro, at least 80% of the products you sell must be handmade. Handmade items use raw or premade materials to create something new or custom. For example:

  • Making pottery out of raw clay and store bought glazes
  • Using jewels from vintage jewelry to create unique pieces
  • Adding custom silk screening to bulk tee shirts

An item is not considered handmade if it was your unique idea but the final product is made by someone other than you. If you sell more than 20% pre-made items (meaning you did not make them), you may qualify for a different ACT policy.

Can I Still Be Covered If I Sell Both Handmade and Pre-Made Items?

Yes, ACT offers coverage for sellers who sell both handmade and pre-made items. The right policy depends on how much of your inventory is handmade and how long you need coverage.

  • Choose ACT Go for short-term coverage when selling handmade or non-handmade items at events
  • Choose ACT Pro if at least 80% of your products are handmade
  • Choose ACT Pro for Curated Sellers if more than 20% of your inventory is pre-made or non-handmade
