Soap Makers Insurance FAQs

What Insurance Do I Need to Make and Sell Soap?

Soapmakers typically need general and product liability coverage, at a minimum.

  • General liability protects you from third-party claims of injury or property damage. It’s often a requirement for selling your soap at farmers markets or craft shows, and many venues will ask for a certificate of insurance (COI) before they let you set up.
  • Product liability covers claims tied to the soaps you make and sell, like if a customer has an allergic reaction and sues you for their medical bills.

Your insurance needs are as unique as your product line, so get a quote to find out which coverages are best for your soap-making business.

Do You Need FDA Approval to Sell Homemade Soap?

No, you do not need FDA approval to sell homemade soap as long as it is labeled and sold as a cleanser only. If your homemade soap is considered a cosmetic, meaning it is used as a moisturizer, deodorizer, or leaves a fragrance behind, then it must comply with FDA regulations. Learn more on the FDA’s website.

Does ACT Soap Makers Insurance Cover Me in All 50 States?

Yes, your policy follows you wherever you go nationwide! Sell handmade soaps at events across state lines, wherever your creativity takes you, knowing you’re covered against general liability claims.

What License Do You Need to Sell Soap?

Most business owners who sell soap need a general business license, plus any permits required by their city or state. If you plan to sell your products online or in person, you’ll also need a sales tax permit.

Requirements vary by location, so check your state’s Secretary of State website and your local city or county government to confirm which permits you need.

What Provides Better Coverage For My Soap-Making Business: ACT Pro or ACT Go?

ACT Pro offers the most comprehensive coverage for soap makers, making it ideal if you sell year-round, run an online shop, or need protection for the products you make. It includes general and product liability, plus free, unlimited additional insureds for markets and events.

ACT Go is better for short-term needs, such as getting quick proof of insurance to sell at craft shows, farmers markets, or single events. It also includes free, unlimited additional insureds.
