Common Questions About Art Gallery Insurance

How Do I Get My Art Insured?

Insure your art by adding Theft & Damage Coverage to your ACT Pro policy. Sometimes referred to as inland marine insurance, this coverage is designed to repair or replace the tools and materials you rely on to run your business and create your masterpieces.

It can also cover your work on display, in transit, or in storage. Keep in mind, while Theft and Damage Coverage is great for art supplies, it’s not the same as fine art insurance. This coverage is based on the Actual Cash Value (ACV), meaning it may cover the cost to remake a piece but not the retail value you planned for.

Every work of art is unique, and Theft and Damage Coverage ensures you’re covered for the work and materials, not the price tag.

An art gallery insurance policy covers common claims that may occur during an exhibit or opening night, like slips and falls or accidental damage to gallery walls.

If you opt for an ACT Pro policy, you can also receive coverage for:

  • Product-related claims, like a sharp sculpture injuring a guest who stepped too close
  • Online sales, such as a buyer claiming your hand-dyed tapestry stained their walls
  • Personal and advertising injury, like another artist claiming your collection is a copy of theirs
  • Theft and damage while your work is on display or in transit to and from exhibits
  • Workshops or classes you teach at a local gallery
  • Cyber attacks, like fraudulent links attached to online listings of your artwork on a gallery’s site

ACT’s policies do not cover murals, performance or live art, graffiti art, three-dimensional installation art, physical structures (like galleries), or the hosting of an exhibit. Please read our policy exclusions to learn more.

You need fine art gallery insurance to protect your work, business, and the liabilities surrounding them. Accidents can happen during an exhibition, while your art is on display, or when it’s in transit — and having the right coverage keeps you financially secure when those unexpected moments occur.

Gallery curators and art directors often require liability insurance to ensure you’re covered in case your artwork causes any accidents or issues with the gallery space or its visitors. The right coverage ensures you’re set for success, from showcasing to selling.
